Anderson Western Colorado Camps, Ltd. was
established in 1962. The first program set up was the Colorado
River Ranch for Boys. In 1968, the Wilderness Pioneer Camp was
founded. Finally, in 1969, Hill Top Ranch for Girls was added.
Each of these camps has a limited enrollment to emphasize individual
attention, yet each is large enough for all campers to develop
numerous friendships. To this day, the camps strive to provide
increased safety and to continue with the same wholesome philosophies
and programs that were initiated over 45 years ago.
The camps are located where a small creek (Sweetwater Creek) and
the Colorado River meet at an elevation of 6,300 feet. The climate
is semi-arid, with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights.
Colorado River Ranch for Boys
&
Hill Top Ranch for Girls
...a true Western adventure where
friendships are made and memories shared
Ages: 7 - 15
The activities
utilize our natural surroundings and are non-competitive, designed
so both the novice and the experienced camper can learn and progress.
Campers choose morning and afternoon activities from a wide variety
of options, including horseback riding, river rafting, playaking,
mountain biking, rappelling, trap shooting, fishing, archery,
climbing wall, ropes course, and hiking. Activities are co-ed.
Each camper
also goes on a number of overnight trips and all-day trips. The
first trip each session is a three-day cabin camp-out. This trip
is not co-ed. The other trip is a 4 or 5-day extended trip. Each
camper makes an individual choice according to his or her interests.
The extended trip's choices consist of caving, mountain climbing,
horseback riding and rafting.
Horse Emphasis
Ages: 7-15
This summer the wrangling staff at Anderson Camps is
offering a horse emphasis program for campers. Those campers
enrolled in the program will spend one portion of their day
working with the wranglers and horses; not only riding but
acquiring horse care skills and horse safety knowledge that
will last a lifetime. Campers will gain the necessary skills
to become safe, responsible riders. Campers will learn
general and specific horse care, see shoeing and hoof care
demonstrations, and come to know individual horses. Other
experiences include corralling and catching horses, bareback
riding, attending rodeo events, saddling and tacking for
rides, and equipment care and maintenance.
Campers enrolled in the program will also branch out from
the basic trail rides offered to regular campers. Wranglers
and riding staff will provide personal riding instruction,
teach more advanced games, and introduce faster gaits, arena,
and rodeo events.
*Daily horseback rides, All-Day rides, and the extended
horseback riding trip will still be available to all campers;
however, horse emphasis campers will be guaranteed spots on those
rides and will spend other activities during a typical day at camp
working with or caring for the horses.
Anderson High Adventures - Co-ed
...the spirit of adventure and pristine
environments
Ages: 13 - 17
(Formerly known as Wilderness Pioneer Camp)
Anderson High Adventures provides a
more challenging experience to build self-confidence and leadership
skills. This small co-ed program accepts 12 applicants. Adventurers
do not choose their trips and activities, but participate in
the entire scheduled program. In-camp time is divided between
beginning and increasing skill levels in specialty areas such
as rock climbing, rappelling and kayaking. Eighty percent of
the session time is spent on a wide variety of out-of-camp
trips, including whitewater rafting in Utah and Colorado, backpacking
in the Flattops, rock climbing, and mountain climbing several of
Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks.
